Horse BBQ????

I was watching a cooking show a few nights ago that I enjoy(ed) and to my shock they had a segment encouraging their viewers to consider HORSE MEAT as an alternative red meat source.

They had their on site reporter visit a horse farm in France where she proceeded to take a stroll in the corral and point out the horse she wanted to "try", a big beautiful chestnut work horse seemingly gentle as can be. So, they led him back to the slaughterhouse and then it cut to her back in England receiving a box at her doorstep full of different horse bits. Then she went on to cook some of it and exclaimed how amazing it tasted and how healthy is was for you and on and on and on and oooonnnnn.. I couldn't take it anymore!!! I was so upset. I really had no idea that horse meat had become such an acceptable source of food in Europe!

I am not a vegetarian and I don't ever plan on becoming one. I grew up on a farm where my family raised our own meat, dairy, fruit, and vegetables, and I understand what goes into raising an animal for meat. I just can't stomach (excuse the pun) horse meat. What's next?? the family dog?? It just sickens me to think of the treatment of such an intelligent and beautiful creature. It saddens me to know that tens of thousands of horses are shipped to Mexico and Canada annually from the U.S., where they are killed under barbaric conditions so their meat can continue to satisfy the palates of overseas diners.

I hope that I don't come across as I total nut job, ranting and raving.. It all just makes me feel really sad and helpless and I had to say my peace I guess. I think the more informed we can become about issues like this, the better.

Don't worry there's no shocking photos, just information.

awful, huh? i know. but it's not any better over here, it's just our horses get slaughtered for dog food. and believe you me they are beautiful, prime horses being auctioned off by the truckloads each month just because there are too many horses and not enough of a market. I almost can't bear to go to the auctions anymore know that I know who the slaughterhouse guys are and see how many beautiful horses they buy up each month. if I could buy 'em all and feed 'em all I surely would!

Horse is one of the more common meats to eat in Switzerland. It always weirded me out, but the strangest thing is that on most menus, it says the horse is from the U.S. As I think most Americans would be repulsed by eating horse, I find it strange that there must be farms in the U.S. to raise horse for slaughter.
